Return to Santiago de Cuba, Cuba

This time we changed our course to find a Fortress of San Pedro de la Roca (1638), near the city, which was the best defense, especially from the English army.

The fort is situated in the entry to the bay, which gives access to Santiago de Cuba. In that bay we can see some curious houses, built over the water, where mainly fishermen live.

And is time to say goodbye to the city of music, with this image taken from one of the tallest buildings in the city, the Melia Santiago, and keeping in mind that most buildings have 1 or 2 floors.

Guantanamo, Cuba

No, I didn’t went to the prison, Guantanamo has much more to offer then just the famous jail.

A place with green everywhere, we can often see plantations, specially sugarcane, where you can get the rum, a great source of Cuban income.

In the picture we can see how a local school welcomes us, for a sport event, the village literally stopped to see us, it was a great way to experience the Cuban spirit.

Santiago de Cuba, Cuba

A place that doesn’t seem to belong to the rest of Cuba, we could say is a piece of Africa in the island. Sure is one of the poorest cities in Cuba, but is also a city with rhythm and with the best parties.

Close to the Serra Maestra were Fidel Castro and Che Guevara started the revolution that would expand to the rest of the country like flowers after the winter.

In the Plaza da Revolution,  we could see a stone statue the Cuban hero Antonio Maceo Gracales, surrounded by 23 iron machetes piercing the sky, showing the power and heroism of cuban people.

Cuba - the first step

Our first trip will show a country that I discover from south to north, with simple and generous people, different kinds of cocktails and of course a great weather.

This journey will start at Santiago de Cuba and will end at Havana, and in the middle we could see a large variety of attractions that would keep us wondering how all can fit in a relative small country.

Come with me in this adventure, bring your sun glasses and some hunger to know more about Cuba…
